Our Garden

March, 2000

The new shed is at the far back, and the apple trees have been pruned and thinned. A lot of the dense shrubbery at the far end has been cleared away. This picture was taken just before the snowdrops and daffodils burst forth, and the first tulips bloomed this week, April 1st.

Compare to the 'before' pictures from a year ago!

Climbing roses

Tea roses

Tea roses in June
We have 6 tea roses, and 6 minatures.

Blackberries

We have lots of bramble fruit.
There's probably a dozen pots of blackberry jam on this bush alone.

Tulips

Easter: We come back from Cornwall
to find we have bluebells and tulips!

One of my projects for this year is to bring some sort of order to the beautiful (but extremely overgrown!) garden we inherited with this house. I'll add pictures to this page throughout the summer to show the changes.

April 11, 1999

This is the 'before' picture. April 11, 1999, the day before the landscapers came to do cut back the shrubs and tidy the flower beds.

April 11, 1999 - View #2

Same day, the view from our bedroom window. Our garden is about 25 feet wide and 100 feet long. You can just see the dark wood of the fence at the far end in this picture. Closest to the house is a small lawn area and a garden shed, in the middle is a a vegetable garden, and in the far end are the apple trees, holly, lilac and forsythia. There are blackberries and raspberries in the beds along the left-hand side, and at the far edge of the vegetable garden. There are tea roses at the near edge of the vegetable garden, and climbing roses along the left.

Ta-da!
4/23/99: The first 'after' picture. This shows the area closest to the house. In the foreground is a small bed planted with low-growing evergreen shrubs and miniature roses. The plants along the fence include spirea, winter jasmine, peonies, and a couple different varieties of ivy.

4/28/99: The apple trees are starting to bloom.
